Virtual three for the weekend in Latvia: art, architecture and occupation

This weekend go virtual so that you don’t get viral – we’ve compiled a few options for getting to know Rīga museums from the comfort of the cosy self-quarantine in your own home. All you need is an internet connection and smart device to browse these exhibits from the comfort of your bed, sofa or comfy armchair!

Google has partnered with museums around the world, including in Rīga, to bring you their exhibits in various online formats. Their site allows you to browse exhibits from the  Fashion Museum  ,  Museum of Decorative Arts and Design  ,  Latvian National Museum of Art  , the    RIGA BOURSE   art museum and others on your computer or tablet. Simply click on the stories to start your virtual tour.

The Riga Art Nouveau Centre is the only museum in the Baltics dedicated solely to architecture that has earned Rīga an inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The  museum’s website   is a treasure trove of information, featuring interactive maps showing building locations, architect biographies, object photos and video. There’s plenty of material for you to plan your own architectural tour for after the pandemic has subsided.

This  virtual tour   takes you inside the former KGB headquarters in Rīga – a building known as the Corner House. The tour features a short introductory video, then brings you 360 degree views of 18 areas of the building. The images allow you to both zoom in and click on information text bubbles, so you can find out more about the conditions and people who were detained and imprisoned in the gloomy building during the 50-year Russian occupation.
