Rimvydas Petrauskas, the dean of the Faculty of History, has been elected Vilnius University’s rector, replacing his predecessor Artūras Žukauskas.
Petraukas was elected for a five-year term by the university’s council from six candidates.
Rector is the most senior official, equivalent to university president or chancellor in English-speaking academia.
Founded in 1579, Vilnius University is today the oldest and the biggest higher education institution in Lithuania.
Petrauskas has said he wants the university to take on more leadership in speaking with the country’s leaders and politicians about making research and education a “real priority”.
“We need to update the studies system, remove organisational and financial obstacles to research cooperation, interdisciplinarity, review the management organisation within the administration to ensure maximum functional efficiency and simplify procedures,” the rector-elect told BNS on Wednesday.
