Vilnius announces winner of iconic street revamp project

An international jury appointed by Vilnius municipality have chosen Strassen-Platz as the winner of the competition to revamp Vokiečių Street in the Lithuanian capital.

“The level of professionalism of submissions differed widely,” according to the chief architect of Vilnius, Mindaugas Pakalnis.

“It’s understandable, as established landscape architects and beginning architects could take part in the open competition,” Pakalnis said in a press release by the municipality.

“But while the public laid criticism on some of the submitted proposals, we thought that one good submission would be enough to claim the competition was a success,” he said.

“I can say we have found it – although not one which we could accomplish here and now,” added Pakalnis.

The winning design will have to be improved to better reflect the needs of the municipality and the residents, according to Pakalnis.

The 18 designs submitted earlier this month were widely  criticised both by the public and professionals.

The winning team will be awarded 9,000 euros, while the two runner-ups will receive 7,000 and 4,000 euros.

According to the municipality, it will take more work for the winning submission to be turned into an actual project.

Vokiečių Street in its current shape appeared in the aftermath of the Second World War when damaged buildings were pulled down.
