Former Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis has been voted in as the new president of the Latvian Basketball Association (LBS).
Vejonis has been elected to a four-year term.
During today’s meeting of LBS members, Vejonis received 34 votes, while his opponent, former Latvian women’s basketball team captain Anete Jekabsone-Zogota, received 14 votes.
Meanwhile, the third candidate, former Latvian national team player Kaspars Cipruss, recalled his candidacy before today’s vote in favor of Vejonis.
“This support is definitely an advance. As I said in the run-up to the election, my goal is to work with you [LBS members]. I will keep these promises. Both myself and the board members must be open to ideas in order to make decisions aimed at the long-term development of Latvian basketball. There is a need for change and improvement,” Vejonis said before the vote.
At the annual LBS meeting on November 14, the organization’s head Valdis Voins said that the next meeting should be held in January 2020, and the president and council should be elected for a period of four years. Voins has been the organization’s president for two terms and said he will not run for another term.
Voins’ term as LBS president will end on January 27 of this year.
