Lithuania on Tuesday marked its version of the pancake day – Užgavėnės.
As per tradition, the celebration marking the end of winter saw the burning of Morė – the effigy of winter – and staged fights between Lašininis, a fat man embodying winter, and Kanapinis symbolising spring,
The latter’s victory symbolises the end of the winter darkness.
In Šiauliai, northern Lithuania, people brought masks aimed to scare away the cold. Take a look at the pictures from the yearly celebrations at the Žaliūkių mill.
