Ukraine adopts martial law, preparing for threat of land invasion from Russia

Ukrainian parliament adopted martial law in a part of the country for 30 days, as Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko pointed to a serious thread of land invasion from the Russian side.

Canadian-British news agency Reuters reports citing Poroshenko as stating that martial law was necessary to increase Ukraine’s defenses after Russia seized three Ukrainian naval ships and took their crew prisoner on Sunday.

Both NATO and the U.S. expressed their support the suvreignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and urged Russia to release the sailors and ships.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Ministry accused Kyiv for creating tension.

«It’s obvious that this painstakingly thought-through and planned provocation was aimed at igniting another source of tension in the region in order to create a pretext to ramp up sanctions against Russia,» according to the ministry’s statement.
