As of September 1, on 13 public transport routes: 1 and 13 trolleybuses and 10, 20, 28, 34, 35, 43, 47 54, 57, 59, 60 bus routes, boarding will be organised only through the front door, said Baiba Bartaševiča-Feldmane, representative of Rīgas Satiksme.
“The purpose of such arrangements is to change the behavior of passengers so that they register each journey, reduce the number of ticket-free riders, and to keep accurate records of passengers, which must be provided in accordance with the regulatory enactments of the Republic of Latvia, as well. This way it is also possible to limit the number of persons travelling in dirtied or smelling clothing in public transport, “– said representatives of Rīgas Satiksme.
For passengers with wheelchairs or strollers, the boarding arrangements shall not change and shall be conducted through the middle doors.
In order to ensure the safety of employees and passengers, the cubicles of public transport drivers shall be equipped with a special protective glass, so that the driver and the passenger may respect additional safety. All public vehicles are also being cleaned and disinfected every day, the company said.
The project, during which boarding of public transport takes place through the front door, was launched on 8 July 2019 with a view to increasing the number of journey registrations by 15%. The results showed that the number of registered trips on routes involved in the project increased by more than 20%, the company said.
