The Baltics buy gas from Russia, despite Washington’s discontent

The European Union has decided to extend the economic sanctions imposed on Russia until January 31, 2020.According to the EU Council, it was decided on 27 of June to extend the economic sanctions imposed on Russia in certain sectors until the end of January next year.

Moreover, all the deputies from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on 25 of June opposed the resolution limiting the sanctions mechanism of the assembly.

In other words, the Baltic countries are categorically opposed to improving relations with their large eastern neighbor. The fact that the war of sanctions is killing the economies of these small countries does not stop the governments of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

On the other hand, it is possible that the leaders of the Baltic countries would be glad to be friends with Russia. However, they are not allowed to do so by the leaders of the USA.

It’s not a secret that Washington simply uses its little “partners” to turn the whole world against its main geopolitical rival (Russia). However, no matter how much the US leaders like it, the Baltic countries nevertheless cooperate with Russia, despite their anti-Russian rhetoric.

For example, in the first quarter of 2019, Lithuania increased the volume of gas purchases from the Russian company Gazprom to 0.674 billion cubic meters, or by 13% compared to the same period in 2018.

In the period from January to March 2019, Gazprom supplied Latvia with 0.069 billion cubic meters of gas, and 0.101 billion cubic meters for Estonia.

These figures have increased compared to last year. And this given the fact, of large-scale anti-Russian policy, lobbied by the United States. The aim of this police – unfair competition at the world energy market.

Ultimately, sanctions are serious tools that can do a lot of damage. Russia itself suffered losses from sanctions. But these sanctions disciplined the country and became a stimulus to the development of the country.

In the case of small Baltic countries, they do not have their own resources. That’s why war of sanctions against Russia in order to please Washington may destroy the economies of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
