Tallinn should maintain dialogue with Moscow on behalf of partners

Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid told the country’s public broadcaster ERR this week that Estonia should “remain the country that tells others – you don’t know, don’t understand, we’re keeping this difficult job of communicating with Russia to ourselves”.

According to her, Estonia should be one of the countries that maintains an independent dialogue with Moscow, while other partners and allies come to it for advice on Russia.

Kaljulaid also dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron’s suggestions to reconsider relations with Russia, saying “we’re not at that stage yet”.

She called to avoid situations where the “Russians take few steps and we immediately take twenty, because we like to portray as if there’s been an improvement and we have a reason to return to business as usual”.
