Spain’s new Prime Minister sworn in without bible

In Spain, the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, Pedro Sánchez has given the oath of the country’s new Prime Minister to King Felipe after the ousting of conservative Mariano Rajoy from power.

British public broadcaster BBC reports that on Saturday, June 2, Sánchez, who is an atheist, took the oath to protect the constitution for he remaining two years of the parliamentary term without a bible or crucifix – a first in Spain’s modern history.

Sánchez brought about the downfall of his predecessor Mariano Rajoy by filing a no confidence motion in parliament following a scandal about a secret campaign fund that the conservative People’s Party ran from 1999 until 2005.

As Spain’s new head of government, whose party only has a quarter of the seats in parliament, he now has to decide who to include in his cabinet and is expected to name them next week.
