Latvia came within an ace of a massive sporting upset May 14 at the IIHF world ice hockey championship in Denmark.
Canada scored first but a determined Latvian outfit did not panic and eventually equalized. Goalie Kristers Gudlevskis was on fire, negating the fact that the Canadians were firing off twice as many shots at goal as the Latvians.
At the end of regulation time the sides were locked at 1:1 and it took an overtime goal from Connor McDavid to win the day for Canada.
Nevertheless Latvia took a point away from the night that means with one match to go in the qualifying round, Latvia lies in 5th place in Group B. That final match is against hosts and fourth-placed Denmark on May 15 in a winner-takes-all clash to decide who makes it into the final stages of the competition.
