Putin insists Russia was right to capture ships, Poroshenko turns to NATO

Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that that Russian forces were in the right to capture three Ukrainian ships and sailors last weekend, whereas his Ukrainian counterpart has urged NATO to send ships to conflict area.

French news agency AFP reports that on Wednesday, November 29, Putin stated in Moscow that the confrontation at sea ohad been orchestrated by Kiev as a «provocation» and that the Ukrainian ships had entered Russian territorial waters and refused to respond to requests to stop from Russian patrol boats.

Speaking about Russian FSB border patrol, the Russian President evaluated: «They were fulfilling their military duty. They were fulfilling their lawful functions in protecting Russia’s borders.»

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has appealed in interviews with German media to NATO members including Germany to send naval vessels to the region to back his country.

«We need a strong, resolute and clear reaction to Russia’s aggressive behavior,» Poroshenko said to Funke newspaper. «That also means stopping the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.»
