Latvian PM: We need to learn to live normally with the virus

In an interview to Latvian Radio October 6, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) said that he would not like to see the state of emergency again in Latvia.

The Prime Minister said that the pandemic has not subsided throughout Europe and around the world. We have two choices, he said. The first is to limit economic activity and movement again. “That’s what we don’t want because it’s essential to keep  economy open as much as possible,” said Kariņš.

Therefore, the second option is to step up security measures to limit the spread of the virus. If all residents comply with distancing, avoid crowding, wash hands often and wear face masks, dystopia again, not crowding, it could help to break the chain of contagion, Kariņš said. If the situation deteriorated, the mandatory face mask use could be extended.

The Prime Minister said that he would not want to go towards the state of emergency.

“We need to learn how to live as normal as possible under the conditions of the virus,” said Kariņš.

Consequently, if individuals follow the rules and recommendations in a disciplined manner, significant restrictions could be avoided.
