Transport Ministry has managed to find the necessary additional EUR 3.7 million to finance press supplies, said Transport Minister Tālis Linkaits after a meeting of the government coalition cooperation council on Monday, 12 August.
The minister said the ministry has evaluated the train procurement schedule for Pasažieru vilciens (PV) and has found a way to divert funding from planned PV depot construction and machinery procurement from 2020 to 2021.
«Press suppliers can calm down because all funding for supplies of subscription-based press and general support will be covered by the budget. EUR 3.7 million will be taken from PV reserves and EUR 2 million will be taken from the state budget,» said Linkaits.
Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš added that the country has supported regional press suppliers in the past and will continue doing that in the future.
«It is important for the government to maintain the voice of democracy. At the same time, we will search for a long-term solution, considering the continued population decline and the fact that people read less printed press,» said the prime minister.
Funding is covered in amendments to the Postal Law, which the Cabinet of Ministers will view 13 August.
The annotation to Transport Ministry’s prepared legislative draft states that EUR 3 762 761 will be allocated from the 2020 budget for press supplies.
