The first child has been diagnosed with the Covid-19 novel coronavirus, and as a result the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) has urged the infected child’s kindergarten in Piņķi to close their doors, according to the SPKC press conference on March 17.
Although the child didn’t attend the kindergarten while presenting symptoms, SPKC epidemiologists discovered the case over a week after the child had been ill. SPKC Infectious Disease Risk Analysis Department Director Jurijs Perevoščikovs confirmed that the child had previously been abroad for quite a while with their family.
“We contacted the kindergarten’s management, gave them instructions that it’s necessary to establish close contact persons. We recommended the kindergarten be closed, we also contacted the municipality, which will make the decision regarding closure,” said Perevoščikovs.
Once close contact persons are determined SPKC epidemiologists will get in touch and provide further recommendations. The main message to parents is to keep an eye on your children’s health. If symptoms emerge, then call 113.
As reported , “Presently in our country there are 60 known cases of COVID-19 virus. The good news – so to speak – is that up to this point we knew exactly where people became ill with this virus. It is still the case that in Latvia no cases of social transmission have been detected, all sources are clearly known,” said Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš.
Also reported , those returning to Latvia from abroad must observe self-isolation by staying home for a 14-day quarantine, according to Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital Department of Infection Control and Surveillance Director, Professor Uga Dumpis.
Latvia experienced a wave of travelers after the Latvian government’s decision to halt passenger transport, and some will definitely be infected. Although returning residents should even avoid contact with family members, they should also avoid seeking medical aid or testing unless they are exhibiting symptoms.
Dumpis said that Latvia is doing a good job of tracking the spread of the novel coronavirus Covid-19 in comparison to other countries. Currently Latvian epidemiologists are able to identify all of the infection cases as people returning from travel abroad or their family members.
