Pick-your-color plastic PET bikinis

Two entrepreneurs from Valmiera have teamed up to create “ Mans Peldkostīms ” (My Swimsuit), which creates functional, comfortable and bespoke swimsuits out of Italian material made from recycled PET and other plastic waste, according to a Latvian Radio broadcast on March 12.

“The idea came about simply because we couldn’t find suitable swimsuits ourselves. And it turns out that other women also have similar problems. Digging deeper, we understood that it’s an untapped market niche,” said entrepreneur and co-founder Laura Žukovska-Supe.

She developed the business idea along with designer Elēna Dmitrijeva over the past two years, and several prototypes are currently being “tested” by a few women. As the next step they plan on creating an online shop, where any woman can design their own suit.

By using recycled materials in their business the entrepreneurs not only prevent further pollution, but actually remove trash from the ecosystem. “From the first moment it was clear that we’ll look for the best that the clothing industry currently has to offer. We’re also planning all the production to reduce waste and excess material to the maximum,” said Žukovska-Supe.

“We’re planning how our company can be sustainable and will and will be respectful to both the client and nature throughout the whole product creation process,” continued Žukovska-Supe.

Because the entrepreneurs have planned out the whole product lifecycle, their company is also included in the Welfare Ministry’s  Register of Social Enterprises  . They’ve also received a social entrepreneurship grant from state-owned development finance institution  ALTUM  , which they’re planning on putting towards creating their internet shop and purchasing equipment.
