On June 12-14 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with US Congressmen and Senators, US Secretary of the Army Mark T. Esper, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflicts Owen West, representatives of the US National Security Council, and other high-ranking US officials while on a visit in the United States. The meetings addressed regional security issues, priorities of the Baltic states in the upcoming NATO Summit, further Lithuanian-US cooperation in defence area.
Minister R. Karoblis also attended “Raising the Curtain on the 2018 NATO Brussels Summit” conference in Washington co-organised by the Atlantic Council US analytical centre and the Ministry of National Defence. It was also attended by high-ranking officials from the US Departments of State and Defence, US National Security Council, and addressed the agenda of the upcoming NATO Summit, security needs in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region, and prospects of enhanced NATO readiness.
Lithuanian-US defence cooperation intensified and US military presence in the region increased when the regional and European security situation changed in 2014. The US is the lead country of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Poland and US soldiers are regularly training in exercise in Lithuania.
