LMT and MikroTik set up 5G lab in Latvia

Latvian technology companies Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) and MikroTik have jointly set up a 5G laboratory, said Elina Lidere, LMT press secretary, October 15.

In the laboratory, up-to-date 5G technology solutions are already being tested and a prototype for the 5G router has just been created, which will enable connected equipment to provide data transmission of unprecedented quality in the future.

As explained by the laboratory’s manufacturers, it has already produced a powerful 4G router, which has also been released by LMT and MikroTik for trade, while in autumn 2020 the joint work on the development of a 5G router prototype has been completed. The developed 5G router could be available in the first quarter of next year.

The 5G laboratory created by LMT and MikroTik is located in a significant location – the legendary VEF building, which was once the main technological development and innovation center not only in Latvia but throughout the region. This location has not been randomly selected for the laboratory, but because the VEF created LMT at the time. Similarly, both LMT and MikroTik are, to some extent, pursuing VEF’s ambitions, said Lidere.

“The creation of this laboratory is one of the main prerequisites for the viability of technological innovation in Latvia, as it opens up the possibilities to improve the solutions to the fullest, while they are still in the development phase. This in turn improves the competitiveness of products created by Latvian Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) companies, as well as expanding the capacity of Latvian leadership in the global technology market,” said Juris Binde, president of LMT.

LMT has also been developing a variety of digital solutions for many years in the fields of drones, smart cities and smart sensors, mobility and protection.

MikroTik is developing wireless and wired networks to manage data flows. The equipment produced by the company is distributed worldwide and is used by Internet service providers, companies and individual users who need to provide data flow routing, firewall, VPN, and other management functions on different wired and wireless computer networks.
