Lithuanian president congratulated German people on Unity Day

President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany on Unity Day and sent her best wishes for the continued success, prosperity, unity, and peace of the people of Germany.

According to the President, the reunification of Germany 28 years ago not only united the country but also opened the way for reconciliation and solidarity of the whole continent. It was a step of major importance to many European nations, including Lithuania, on their path towards freedom and independence and fostered the responsibility of Europeans for their future.

“Today Germany is a key leader of Europe and its commitment as well as voice advocating for democracy and freedom is well heard across the world. We are proud to have Germany as our close ally, partner and friend,” Dalia Grybauskaitė wrote in her message of congratulations.

According to the President, over the years of reestablished Lithuanian independence, especially after joining the EU and NATO, Germany undoubtedly became one of our key partners. The President underlined that Lithuania and Germany enjoyed particularly close political, economic and cultural cooperation enhanced by annually growing trade and investments, joint social, academic, youth, science and innovation projects.

Dalia Grybauskaitė emphasized that Lithuania highly valued Germany’s historic decision to take the lead role in NATO’s enhanced forward presence in Lithuania and the extraordinary leadership of Germany as European countries resolutely assumed the responsibility for our defense.

In her message of congratulations, the President wished a happy celebration to the people of Germany.
