One of Lithuania’s most experienced mountaineers, 38-year-old Vytautas Mažeika, suffered lethal injuries after falling 50 metres in the French Alps.
Mažeika and his two Lithuanian companions were descending the 4,248-metre peak of Mont Blanc du Tacul on Tuesday when two of the group fell down a crevasse, 15min.lt reports.
Bad weather complicated the rescue operation. Mažeika’s life could not be saved, while his companion, identified by 15min.lt as Edvinas G., suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
“We are looking into the circumstances [of the incident], so far we know that two people, Edvinas and Vytautas, fell down during a descent,” Kęstutis Skrupskelis, the president of the Lithuanian Mountaineering Association, has confirmed to LRT.lt. “Edvinas is now in hospital, but he is fine, he hasn’t suffered bad injuries, but Vytautas died.”
