Lithuania dismisses Moscow claims that Belarus protesters train in Baltics

Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry has dismissed claims by the Russian foreign intelligence chief that the United States trains Belarusian protesters in Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine.

“We have been hearing such stories created by Russia for six years now, since the time of Maidan in Kyiv,” the ministry said on Wednesday. “We doubt that the authors of these statements themselves believe in them.”

“So far, the world has only seen ‘little green men’ and ‘independent’ journalists sent to Belarusian television to replace those who refused to work for the regime,” it added.

Sergei Naryshkin, the director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, has claimed that the US trained Belarusian protesters in Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine through non-governmental organisations.

Moscow and Minsk have repeatedly claimed of foreign interference in Belarus. Lithuanian officials have previously said these statements are aimed at diverting attention from the regime repressions against the Belarusian people.
