Latvian eID card to become primary document over passport from 2023

For the citizens of Latvia, the eID card currently used on par with the Latvian passport, will become the primary document for proving a person’s identity from the year 2023.

The Latvian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development stated on Wednesday, August 29, that the passport would be from then on a secondary personal identity document or a travel document.

The government backed on Tuesday, August 28, corresponding draft amendments to the Law on Personal Identification Documents, which also set forth a transition period from 2019 to 2022.

According to Kaspars Gerhards, the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister, the eID card can currently be used for travel, signing documents online with the electronic signature and for applying for and receiving online services.
