Latvia will not take in migrants from destroyed camp in Greece

Interior Minister Sandis Ģirģens (KPV LV) denied Latvia’s possibility to take in migrants from burnt-down migrant camp in Moria, Lesbos island, in Greece, the Minister said September 15.

Greece has raised the question on migrant accommodation in Europe after the camp Moria, housing more than 13,000 migrants, was ravaged by fire on Wednesday, September 9.

Lithuania has denied possibility to take in these migrants. Ģirģens said his “position aligned with Lithuania’s position”.

Ģirģens said this attitude was rational: “There is a lot to do, we must continue EU external border security, strengthen Frontex, collaborate with third countries, create effective return policy to homelands. There are many tools EU can use to solve the so-called migrant crisis.”
