Future Riga Mayor wants to form consultative board with NGOs

The future Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis (Development/For!/Progressives) said in an interview to Latvian Radio September 7 that he wants to form an advisory council where the interests of Riga residents would be represented by various non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

He said that the biggest mistakes of the long-standing former mayor of Riga, Nils Ušakovs (“Harmony”), had been “arrogance”, and “reliance on being forgiven”. “Evidently, [people] did not forgive,” said Staķis.

According to Staķis, people have a “certain fill of patience” that has now overflown. “Not to listen to residents is the biggest mistake,” said the politician.

In his opinion, the “60-member model” in Riga City Council does not fully work. The interests of people are better represented by NGOs. It is therefore intended to develop a long-term cooperation model, a consultative council with NGOs representing the interests of the population.

Similarly, the future Mayor of Riga wants to look for a model of cooperation with the political forces in opposition, as well as to find out the satisfaction of Riga residents with a variety of services, such as housing management.

Staķis said that he regarded politics as a mission with the aim of accomplishing something, adding that work with voters happens every day, not just the pre-election campaign.
