Frequent sex will make life better as you get older: study

Older folks who have been intimate with their partners in the past year are more likely to be happier with their lives, according to a new study.

Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England, surveyed 6,879 adults with an average age of 65, and found that women who reported higher frequencies of kissing, petting and fondling were associated with greater life satisfaction, while men who reported having sexual intercourse were more likely to be fulfilled with their lives.

The study saw that intercourse was more important for senior men than women when it came to their well-being.

“Encouragement to try new positions and explore different types of sexual activities is not regularly given to [aging] populations,” Lee Smith, a lecturer of exercise medicine at Anglia Ruskin University and co-author of the study, wrote in a press release.

Lee hopes their results will encourage doctors to focus on their senior patients’ sexual health.

“The findings of our study suggest that it may be beneficial for physicians to query geriatric patients about their sexual activity and offer help for sexual difficulties, such as problems with erections, as sexual activity helps older people live more fulfilling lives,” he said.
