France tightens smartphone ban to schoolchildren

Pupils in France will not be allowed to use their smartphones at school, starting from the new school year according to a ban adopted by the French parliament.

French news agency AFP reports that the restriction on smartphones, tablets and other internet devices passed on Monday, July 30, which will apply to pupils up to the age of 14-15, fulfils a campaign pledge by centrist President Emmanuel Macron.

The new regulation allows schools to choose a partial or total ban on the devices, to have exceptions for pedagogical use, activities out of the school programme or for handicapped pupils. This is the second law on the issue in France after a previous ban, adopted in 2010, which already banned smartphone use during class.
