First individual constitutional complaint reaches Lithuania’s top court

After Lithuania allowed individuals to file constitutional complaints, the first case reached the top court on Monday.

Under the amendment introduced in September last year, any person who believes their constitutional rights or freedoms were violated can turn to the Constitutional Court.

The complaint that reached court on Monday was filed by a person sentenced to four years in prison for crimes related to unlawful possession of drugs and smuggling.

The petitioner is challenging the ban on suspended sentences for people convicted of serious crimes.
