Fake news story alleges Lithuanian officer was captured spying in Poland

A fake report about a Lithuanian military officer detained in Poland has been targeting Lithuania’s media outlets, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday.

The report falsely claims that “Poland’s Internal Security Agency has detained Antanas K., an officer of the Lithuanian military, suspected of spying for Lithuania”.

The Ministry of Defence says the announcement, which was sent out to Lithuanian media outlets from an email address apparently within Poland’s Internal Security Agency, is a typical piece of fake news written in irregular language.

The story was first spotted on July 21 on the German-language website thomaskraubitz.wixsite.com, according to the ministry.
