Facebook stops 115 accounts over inauthentic pre-election behaviour

Shortly before the U.S. midterm election, the American social networking giant Facebook has announced blocking of Facebook and Instagram accounts with the combined number of 115.

The firm stated on Monday, November 5, on its blog that it has been notified by U.S. law enforcement authorities about recently discovered activity, allegedly linked to entities outside the U.S.

«Our very early-stage investigation has so far identified around 30 Facebook accounts and 85 Instagram accounts that may be engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior. We immediately blocked these accounts and are now investigating them in more detail,» wrote Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s Head of Cybersecurity Policy.

He continued by explaining that «almost all the Facebook Pages associated with these accounts appear to be in the French or Russian languages, while the Instagram accounts seem to have mostly been in English — some were focused on celebrities, others political debate».
