COVID-19 daily case total hits new high

On October 30 Latvia confirmed 284 new cases of COVID-19, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). This is the highest daily total yet recorded since the start of the pandemic, topping the previous record high of 259 cases on October 24.

The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic now stands at 5,679.

Five deaths were also confirmed, also the highest number yet recorded. One of the victims was aged 40 to 45 years, and four were in the 65 to 85 age bracket. 

Of 5,964 tests carried out, 4.8% were positive, down slightly on the 4.9% rate the previous day. A rate of more than 3% is regarded as an indication that the disease is spreading rapidly.

So far 1,406 patients have recovered from infection and 69 have died.

The National Health Service (NVD) provided an update if the situation in Latvia’s hospitals. At the moment 195 persons are being treated in hospital, of which total 185 are displaying moderate symptoms while ten have serious symptoms. The previous day saw 197 patients being treated.

On October 29 the 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 of population was 114.7 in Latvia, 201.6 in Lithuania and 48.5 in Estonia, according to data from the  European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control  .

October 30 brought  735 confirmed cases in Lithuania   and the highest daily death toll yet. In  Estonia 101 new cases   were registered.
