COVID-19 case total increases by 58 in Latvia; one death recorded

58 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Latvia October 18, taking the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 3,450.

One more death was also recorded, bringing the total number of fatalities to 44. The latest victim was aged 70 to 75, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

SPKC said 2,690 tests were conducted during the previous 24-hour period. 2.1% of tests conducted were positive (down from 3.5% the previous day). This last figure is becoming increasingly important as a measure of Latvia’s ability to control the spread of the coronavirus. More than 3% means that the disease is spreading uncontrollably.

So far 1,329 patients have recovered from infection and 44 have died.

Data from the National Health Service (NVD) show that seven patients have been hospitalized over the past 24 hours. Currently, 72 patients are being treated in hospitals, up from 66 on Saturay. 66 patients show moderate symptoms of the disease, six have severe symptoms.

On October 18 Lithuania recorded 252 cases of coronavirus, while Estonia recorded 26 cases, reported LTV. 

On October 16 the 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 of population was in 65.6 Latvia, 74.6  in Lithuania and 38.5 in Estonia, according to data from the   European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control   .

The threshold for the introduction of compulsory self-isolation upon arrival in Latvia is now pegged to Latvia’s own rate last Friday of 61.9.
