Coronavirus update: medical worker tests positive after returning from Kazakhstan


One new coronavirus case has been confirmed in Lithuania over the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total count to 1,817, the country’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

At the moment, 214 people are considered active cases, while 1,515 have recovered from Covid-19.

Twenty-seven of the new cases diagnosed since June 1 are believed to have been contracted abroad.

Seventy-eight people have died of Covid-19 in the country so far, and ten more coronavirus-infected patients have died of other causes.

Over Monday, 4,472 people were tested in Lithuania.

The latest infection was diagnosed to a medical worker who had returned from Kazakhstan.

“A resident of Klaipėda district who returned from Kazakhstan to Vilnius Airport via Amsterdam on June 24,” Ginreta Megelinskienė of the National Public Health Centre told BNS.

The person had spent four months working in healthcare in the Central Asian country, she added.

The medical worker was tested in Klaipėda upon return, even though no symptoms had emerged at the time. The first symptoms appeared on June 28, according to Megelinskienė.

At the moment, eight people are treated for Covid-19 in Lithuanian hospitals, two of them are in intensive care, said Megelinskienė.
