Access to official secret to be provided to CEC chairman in Latvia

On Thursday, 14 March, Saeima deputies supported amendments to the Law on Official Secrets in the second reading. Changes to the law provide access to official secrets to the chairman of the Central Election Commission, as reported by Saeima’s press-service.

The goal of approved amendments is providing the chairman of CEC with full information during preparation and management of elections, providing supervision of possible risks and threats that could potentially compromise and otherwise negatively affect the election process and national security, as the annotation to the legislative draft mentions.

Representatives of State Security Service and Constitution Protection Bureau informed deputies that providing of permit to access to official secrets to the chairman of CEC would allow more transparent exchange of information useful for prevention of threats to decision-making processes.
